18/03/2008 - Project Centred Learning Symposium 2008

The CMI Project Centred Learning Workshop is an exchange of knowledge and experience about PCL in higher education. This workshop draws from the expertise of an international group of individuals using PCL as a pedagogical tool.

Overview

This CMI Project-Based Symposium provided an opportunity to exchange knowledge and experience about Project-Centered Learning - PCL (or Project-Based Learning, PxBL).  The event focused on the earlier years in the undergraduate curriculum and drew from the expertise of an international group of individuals using PCL as a pedagogical tool.

The CMI Project Centred Learning (PCL) Symposium, an exchange of knowledge and experience about PCL in higher education, took place on 17 - 19 March at MIT. The workshop focused on the experiences of an international group of individuals who have used PCL as a pedagogical tool. They discussed the benefits of focused team-based courses and hands-on projects, which provide students with authentic experience during the early years of their college education.

Day One (18 March 2008)
The first day reviewed the uses of PCL in different disciplines; the role of content, social context and external community partners; and addressed issues related to team-oriented project work.

Day Two (19 March 2008)
The second day addressed issues related to cost and other feasibility challenges; discussed scalability and sustainability; and looked at evidence supporting the benefits of PCL.   Presenters were asked to compare the PCL approach to science with a typical approach to science pedagogy in their institution.
