The Silent Aircraft Initiative was launched three years ago with a bold aim - to develop a conceptual design for an aircraft whose noise was almost imperceptible outside the perimeter of an airfield in an urban environment. This event, marking the end of this stage of the Silent Aircraft Initiative, will bring together a wide community of interested parties including pioneering academics, regulators, airport operators, airlines, aerospace manufactures, policy makers and representatives of community groups.
The event will include the first public presentation of the Initiative’s conceptual design, feedback on the design from Boeing and Rolls-Royce, and a discussion of the challenges to be overcome if such an aircraft is to be realised within the 2030 time frame.
As well as producing future long-term concepts, the Silent Aircraft Initiative has conducted extensive work to reduce the noise and fuel burn of conventional aircraft through changes in existing operations. The development and results of flight trials of enhanced Continuous Descent Approaches at a UK airfield will be presented at the event, with comments from the operators involved. The Silent Aircraft Initiative’s model of stakeholder engagement in research will also be examined, together with the benefits and some lessons learnt.
The day’s proceedings will be chaired by Philip Ruffles, former Director, Engineering and Technology, Rolls-Royce.
The event is free of charge, but advanced registration is required.
The Silent Aircraft Initiative is funded by the Cambridge-MIT Institute, a joint venture between the University of Cambridge and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). Since its launch in 2003, the Silent Aircraft Initiative has brought together 40 researchers at Cambridge and MIT with a wide community of interested parties including regulators, airport operators, airlines, aerospace manufactures and representatives of community groups. Over 30 collaborators are involved in the Initiative, including Boeing, CAA, Cranfield University, DHL, easyJet, Lufthansa Cargo, NASA, Nottingham East Midlands Airport (NEMA) and Rolls-Royce.
