08/12/2006 - The Cambridge Weblab Launch

Hands-on laboratory experiences have enormous educational value, but traditional teaching laboratories are expensive and have complex logistics. They also lie idle for much of the time because physical access to the labs is restricted to normal office hours.

In order to overcome these drawbacks the novel Cambridge Weblab has been designed, and set up, in the Department of Chemical Engineering at the University of Cambridge. The Weblab builds on the kind of software for remote operation that is widely used in industry. It consists of a small reactor, auxiliary equipment, and a state-of-the-art industrial control system. With the Weblab, students can get laboratory experience at any time and perform their work from any location that has internet access. The experimental equipment can be easily shared and used around the clock from anywhere in the world. This drastically changes the economics of providing laboratory experiments to students and, potentially, a huge number of experiments can be available for use.

The Weblab opening ceremony brings together people from various backgrounds such as process control, plant operation, and e-learning originating from industry and education.
