10/10/2005 - Wireless Technology Roadmap Workshop

The purpose of the workshop is to develop a wireless technology roadmap. This will be used to establish opportunities for multi-disciplinary research relating to all aspects of wireless communications. Its remit is therefore extremely broad, examining economic, commercial, regulatory, political, technological, cultural, social and psychological issues that are relative to the use of wireless technology.

Accordingly a wide range of issues will need to be considered, for example:
  • Why have particular wireless technologies succeeded and failed?
  • How can the spectrum be best regulated?
  • Where, for example is open spectrum most appropriate?
  • What steps, if any, are needed to regulate new technologies such as Ultra Wide Band, Cognitive, Peer to Peer and Software Radios?
  • How will other related technologies such as broadband bandwidth, display technologies and increasing computing power impact wireless technologies?
  • What effects do usability, cultural factors and security issues have on the success of wireless technologies?
  • What are the issues and how can improvements be made?
The resulting roadmap will be publicly available at no cost. It will feed into a final CMI policy document designed to drive government policy, help set research priorities and influence industry. The workshop is designed to be interactive, allowing delegates from different fields to share their extensive knowledge and expertise. It will include short presentations from a diverse range of speakers. A more detailed agenda will be posted shortly on the CMI events web site.
The wireless technology roadmap is one of a series of events being run by the Communications Research Network (CRN). It is part of a process, with the aim of developing version one of a roadmap for wireless technology by January 2006, with the longer term aim of extending the approach to other communications areas. The results of the workshop will form an integral part of the Roadmap, making an important contribution to shaping the CRN and Communication Futures Programme (CFP) research programmes. There is no charge for attendance and the event includes lunch, refreshments and a dinner in college. We very much hope you will be able to attend.
If you are interested in participating at this event, please contact Jackie Ouchikh for details on how to register.

  • Adrian Mars (CRN Cartographer)
  • Jon Crowcroft (Principal Investigator, Communications Research Network)
  • Vivek Mhatre (Post Doctoral Fellow, Intel Research)
  • Mike Marcus (Marcus Spectrum Solutions)
